Stihl MS 290 Chainsaw Will Not Start Warm
I bought this model saw about four months ago to replace a similar size shindaiwa. Shindaiwa was not importing in the US then due to epa regs the best I could find out. In my shopping had both Husky and Stihl dealers to say the Shindaiwa was very good cranking saw. Was later told Echo bought Shindaiwa was in serious financially condition is why.
Well my experience with the Stihl has been very disappointing. I have a backpack blower of theirs about 17 years old and it cranks like a champ. I have a mixed of small engines and the worst of any to crank is this saw. So asked dealership on advice, some smart comments was about as good as I got. Looked at youtube on this and found some advice. Followed it and it worked fine for one afternoon.
Then this past Saturday needed to cut up some ice damage trees and when cold could crank the saw fine. Not near as good as the Shindaiwa but decent. Then ran it for a while and cut it off and it cranked okay. Then ran it again a few minutes due to cutting and loading onto trailer and the saw was not startable. It gave sound as if no fuel in the system just a dry turn over. My brother in law has same model and he tried and he failed. Dealership is convinced it is not the saw and it may not be. But this saw has me whipped on cranking when it has been run. I also had it to cut off while running if I let up on the throttle while cutting.
I am using 100% gas with stihl oil mixed to their ratio. I had friend tell me if that mixture is more than a month old it will not work. Does fine in my other two cycles.
For cold cranking put on choke for one pull, then off of choke to fast idle and make up to three pulls. It not started then back to choke for one more pull.
On starting after has been run have done same, also not used choke at all and it just shows no indication it will start.
thanks for your help, kt

Stihl MS 290 Chainsaw Will Not Start Warm
Thank you all. So stay away from the choke unless totally cold. Do you use normal idle or fast idle when warm?
Joel, think I will take back to dealer to let them set carb. I assume still in warranty.
